Our Story

The History Behind El Charrito

Teresa and Jose Moncada migrated to the United States from Mexico in the early 1960's with their 5 children in pursuit of the American dream. The family arrived in Salinas, CA, spoke no English and struggled to find work. Life in their new country was challenging and they knew they would have to own their business to take control of their future.  After many years of hard work, they took advantage of an opportunity to achieve their goal by opening a small grocery store in 1981. The grocery store catered to the Mexican community and contained a deli counter that sold Teresa's recipes. Over the forty year period since opening, the once grocery store, evolved to what El Charrito does best, which is fully focusing on selling food while using old Mexican cooking techniques. Our dishes and hand stretched flour tortillas are rooted in home-style preparation, bringing traditional Mexican cuisine from our kitchen to your table. It is still a family business, family-owned, family operated, and family loved.

Helping to complete the family’s recipe of success is the personal atmosphere and warm welcome from familiar employees. Thank you, long-time employees, for your loyalty and commitment to the Moncada family! Equally important are you, the customers, who have been coming to El Charrito since we opened our doors. iGracias y buen provecho!
